Most SaaS explainer videos are too long. Here is how to decide the right length for your product, what actually drives drop off, and why shorter usually converts better.
How Long Should a SaaS Explainer Video Be?
Short answer: 60 to 90 seconds for most SaaS products. If you are building a demo video for buyers already in your funnel, you can go longer. If it is sitting on your homepage, treat 90 seconds as a ceiling, not a target.
But length is the wrong thing to optimise for, and that is worth explaining before you brief anyone.
Why most explainer videos are too long
Almost every video that runs long does so for the same reason.
The team briefing it knows the product too well.
When you live inside a product every day, every feature feels load bearing. Removing one feels like misrepresenting what you built. So the script grows. Three features become six. A single clear use case becomes a tour of the whole platform. The video ends up at two and a half minutes and technically explains everything, which is the problem, because nobody watched past forty seconds.
Your homepage visitor does not need to understand your product.
They need to understand whether your product is for them. Those are very different jobs, and only one of them is a video’s job.
Length is a symptom, not a decision
Here is the more useful way to think about it.
A video does not lose people because it is long. It loses people because it stops earning attention. A well built ninety second video holds better than a badly built forty five second one.
What makes a video stop earning attention is almost always one of these:
It opens with the company instead of the problem. Nobody cares who you are until they know you understand what is wrong.
It explains features instead of outcomes. Feature lists are reference material. Videos are persuasion.
It has no single idea. If a viewer cannot repeat your video in one sentence afterwards, it did not land, regardless of length.
It moves at a uniform pace. Good videos vary rhythm. They speed up through the familiar and slow down on the thing that matters.
Fix those four things and the video usually gets shorter on its own, without anyone deciding to cut it.
Recommended lengths by video type
Different videos do different jobs, so they take different amounts of time.
Homepage explainer: 60 to 90 seconds. This is your highest traffic, lowest commitment placement. Visitors are deciding whether to keep reading. Land one clear idea and get out.
Product demo: 2 to 4 minutes. Different audience entirely. These people are already interested and want to see how it works. You have earned more time, so use it to show real workflows.
Feature animation: 10 to 30 seconds. Single feature, single moment. These live next to the feature they describe, so context is already established.
Paid social ad: 15 to 30 seconds. The first three seconds decide everything. Front load the hook.
Investor or launch video: 60 to 120 seconds. You are selling a vision, not a workflow, so there is room for narrative.
Trade show or event loop: 45 to 75 seconds. Assume it plays muted, on repeat, to people walking past.
What we learned building a 57 second platform explainer
We recently built an explainer for Roomonitor, a hospitality SaaS platform. The product operates across three layers of guest communication: an AI layer, a human control centre, and a field service team dispatched to properties.
Three distinct systems, each with its own logic and its own
moment to act. On paper this sounds like a three minute video.
It shipped at 57 seconds, with no voiceover.
It worked because the video did not explain all three layers. It showed one guest problem escalating through them. A failed check in, a lock with a dead battery, resolved in twenty seven minutes across all three systems. One story taught the entire structure, because the viewer watched it happen rather than being told about it.
That is usually where length savings actually come from. Not cutting content, but finding the single narrative that carries several ideas at once.
How to decide your own length
Before you brief a video, answer three questions in writing.
Who is watching, specifically. Not “SaaS founders.” A founder comparing you against two competitors behaves nothing like a founder discovering your category for the first time.
What is the one thing they need to understand. One. If you have three, you have three videos, or you have not found the idea that contains all three yet.
What should they do next. Start a trial, book a demo, join a waitlist. The video should end pointed at exactly one action.
Once those three answers exist, the right length becomes obvious.
Most teams find they need far less video than they assumed, and that the video they end up with performs better than the longer one they had planned.
The rule worth keeping
If a viewer cannot summarise your video in a single sentence after watching it once, the problem is not the length. It is the script.
Cutting thirty seconds from a video with no clear idea just gives you a shorter video with no clear idea.
